The Philippines National Rugby League will welcome the Spanish Men’s national Rugby League team, the España Toros, this June for the inaugural Friendship Cup.
Taking place on Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day (June 30), the clash will take place at Baler, Aurora, in what will be the region’s second International after the venue hosted the 2019 Asian Cup clash against Japan.
Friendship day pays homage to the exceptional loyalty and bravery shown by the Spanish troops in the church of Baler and celebrates the close ties the two countries continue to enjoy today.
Commenting on the match Reynaldo Nery, PNRL President, stated “We are delighted to take to the field against Spain on this historic occasion both in terms of Rugby League development but as a continuation of the friendship that began in Baler 122 years ago. Not only is this a big step for our National team it is a big step for our domestic development and the road to the World Cup in 2025.”
Dean Buchan, Head of España Rugby League, added “We’re very proud to have reached an agreement with PNRL to celebrate the wonderful event that is Philippine-Spanish Friendship day. It’s a truly special day that doesn’t just celebrate the past, but focuses on the close ties both countries enjoy today. It’s fitting that Rugby League is part of these celebrations as we know that the rugby league world is a family and that’s what makes our sport special, just as unique as the Philippine-Spanish friendship day.”
Entry to the match will be free.
